Toy Story 2

Some time after the events in Toy Story, Andy is getting ready to go to Cowboy Camp with Woody. But as the two play, Woody's arm is accidently torn. Unable to take him to camp, his mom stores Woody on the shelf where broken toys are eventually abandoned. The next day Woody finds his friend, the toy penguin Wheezy. Wheezy was left on the shelf after his squeaker failed. Woody fears the same fate will sometime befall on him, particularly as Andy's mom takes old items (including Wheezy), from the room for a yard sale. Woody sets off to rescue his fellow toy with the assistance of Andy's dog Buster, but ends up stuck on a table after saving Wheezy. Al McWiggin, an obsessive toy collector, spots Woody and first attempts to bargain with Andy's mom for him. But after that fails, he distracts her and steals Woody instead. Buzz Lightyear tries to save Woody but is unable to keep up with Al's car. However he is able to use the license plate and a feather from the car to identify McWiggin as the owner of "Al's Toy Barn". Buzz enlists Mr. Potato Head, Rex, Slinky Dog, and Hamm on a rescue mission to recover Woody before Andy returns home.

Al brings Woody back to his apartment where he meets other toys: a hyperactive yodeling cowgirl named Jessie, Bullseye the horse, and the wise and paternal Stinky Pete, the Prospector. An unsold toy, Pete remains inside his original box. They reveal to Woody that he is a vintage "Sheriff Woody" collectible doll and the star of the long forgotten children's TV show, Woody's Roundup. Furthermore, he is the last piece needed before Al can sell the toys and assorted memorabilia to a Japanese toy museum. Woody, though initially astounded at his past fame, refuses to go to Japan and abandon Andy. This causes conflict with Jessie, who fears returning to storage. Woody is put off by Jessie's foul behavior and is eager to leave after Al brings in a toy cleaner to fix his arm. But the Prospector manages to persuade him to talk it over with Jessie. The cowgirl describes her past of being a toy once loved by a little girl called Emily, but then left forgotten as Emily grew up. As her owner discovered other pleasures like fashion and make-up, Jessie was eventually dropped off in a charity box. Woody sympathizes with Jessie, since an extremely similar fate nearly befell him when Buzz first came into Andy's life. The Prospector also points out how unlikely it is that Andy and Woody's own relationship will last into the boy's adulthood. Feeling he may not last for much longer, Woody decides to stay, and he and Jessie come to terms with each other.

Buzz and the other toys make their way to Al's Toy Barn, located across the street from Al's apartment. During the search Buzz is distracted by the displays of other Buzz Lightyear figures. Later trying to take a utility belt from another model, which is an upgrade to all new Buzz Lightyear toys. However he is overpowered and stuffed into an empty display box by the second Buzz. Who as it turns out, (like the first Buzz in the first movie) thinks himself a real space ranger. Buzz #2 meets the rest of the rescue group who mistake him for Andy's Buzz (here, Buzz #2 thinks the group are actually working to defeat the evil Emperor Zurg). The group discover Al in his office and stow away in a duffel bag as he goes back to his apartment. Andy's Buzz manages to escape the display box and gives chase across the street, but unknowingly releases an Emperor Zurg action figure. Zurg also believes himself to be real and sets off in pursuit.

The other toys (left in Al's car), find a route to the elevator shaft to get to Al's apartment. There they finally meet up with Woody, also Andy's Buzz arrives and proves quite quickly to be the one they know. Woody tells them he doesn't want to be rescued and intends to go with his new friends to Japan, since he is now a "collector's item". Andy's Buzz, in a role reversal from the first movie, tells Woody that he is a toy, meant to be played with instead of being on display in a museum. At first, Woody refuses to listen but then feeling rather downcast, he realizes that he would be far happier watching Andy grow up come what may. Woody abandons his plans to go to Japan and makes to leave the room (through a grill in the wall) to go home. Then he has an idea and invites the rest of the Roundup Gang to be Andy's latest toys. Jessie is rather indecisive, yet Bullseye proves willing to go. However the Prospector — having an extreme hatred of the "space toys" like Buzz who drove cowboy toys like him out of fashion — actually leaves his box and locks Woody, Jessie, and Bullseye into the room. Saying that the museum trip is his first chance of being loved (since he was never sold) and won't have Woody messing it up for him. Al shortly returns and packs up the toys before Buzz's group can break inside again to rescue them.

The other toys attempt give chase, but encounter Emperor Zurg in the elevator. While the rescue team escape, Buzz #2 battles Zurg who informs him "Buzz, I am your father!" (an obvious reference to Star Wars: Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back). Rex inadvertently manages to defeat the Emperor by accidentally knocking him down the elevator shaft with his tail. Although he manages to survive, his mind has been affected by the fall. Buzz #2 decides to stay behind with his 'father' and the two engage in a ball game. The original Buzz and the other toys hijack a Pizza Planet delivery truck and drive to the airport. Entering the luggage area, they find the briefcase containing the Roundup Gang and rescue Woody. Despite the Prospector's attempts to stop them (tearing Woody's arm again in the process), they escape and the toys manage to beat and send Stinky Pete off with a face painted Barbie doll. Finally giving him the chance of being played with by a child, an experience which he will certainly not enjoy. While the others manage to get Bullseye out, they are unable to rescue Jessie before the briefcase is loaded onto the plane. Giving chase, Woody, Buzz, and Bullseye manage to rescue her as the plane is taking off.

Some time later the toys have returned to Andy's room, just in time to be there for Andy's return from camp. Andy is pleased by the appearance of Jessie and Bullseye (thinking they're presents from his mother), and carefully repairs Woody's arm himself. Jessie and Bullseye are happy to be accepted as toys once again. The group also learn that Al's Toy Barn went bankrupt and out of business over failing to deliver the toys to the museum. Woody admits to Buzz that he knows that Andy will someday outgrow him, but that Buzz will be there with him, "for infinity and beyond."
